For all the reasons a person would want a car, arguably the most dubious, and infinitely complex, is the car purchase motivation borne from the need for social acknowledgement. It’s a human thing, we suppose, kind of like comparing bulges at the beach.
If you are considering a car that requires multiple memberships of Swiss bank accounts (or Malaysian ones, we’re not judging), then your motivation for the purchase is most likely primarily driven by status.
Still, how would you know which car would exude the most socialest of statuses? For one, we’d recommend looking at the price point. Anything close to affordable is not for you. One does not simply get street cred by purchasing a Hyundai Elantra, no matter how many Car of the Year awards it may have garnered. No, you will need something that is not easily obtained, like that popular girl in college that everyone drools over.
Next, look out for car brands that ooze prestige, whether it be through technology (e.g. Tesla), heritage (e.g. Bugatti), or ballsout lunacy (e.g. Koenigsegg). Some brands also attempt to price themselves into the zone, technically known as the luxury segment (or colloquially known as the mahal sial segment). Car companies like Aston Martin, BMW, MercedesBenz, Jaguar, Audi and Bentley have been trying to outdo each other by whipping out delectably luxurious land barges for quite some time now. Each has its own unique appeal, its attractiveness you will need to discern for yourself.
Other carmakers tempt your heart (and wallet) by instilling a sense of excitement into its offerings. The performance segment is for people with the paradoxical quality of a relatively large account balance, and a relatively small nether region. Or, well, people who can actually turn these firebreathing monsters into a ballerina on pointe. Examples of carmakers who dabble in the performance segment are Ferrari, Porsche, Lamborghini, and McLaren.
