[best engine oil] engine oil recommendation - Kixx PAO 1

Kixx PAO is a synthetic engine oil based on the Tri-Synthetic formula including PAO (polyalphaolefin). Satisfying the American Petroleum Institute (API) performance standards and European standards, Kixx PAO is suitable for all vehicle types that run on gasoline, diesel (including RVs) and LPG. Comprised of Kixx PAO 1 0W-30, 0W-40, Kixx PAO 5W-30, and Kixx PAO 5W-40, the Kixx PAO lineup boasts superior oxidation stability, delivers a smooth and comfortable ride, and provides complete engine protection.
Formulated with 100% PAO synthetic base stocks, Kixx PAO 1 0W-30 is the official engine oil of Kixx PAO Racing Team sponsored by GS Caltex. That is, its superiority is verified through use in racing machines. PAO is the abbreviation of polyalphaolefin. It is a high-grade synthetic base oil mainly used in aircraft engine oils. The chemical molecular structure is artificially synthesized to enable superior performance compared to regular mineral base oil in terms of low temperature fluidity, oxidation stability and thermal stability, all of which are important items in engine oil performance tests.
Applications
- All vehicles with gasoline, automotive diesel or LPG engines produced in Korea
- Luxury imported cars such as Benz, BMW and Lexus
- High-performance, gasoline-powered cars with DOHC, EFI and VVT
- Motorcycles with four-stroke engines powered by gasoline
- Vehicles fitted with exhaust gas reduction (DPF, CPF)
- Vehicles fitted with a turbocharger/intercooler
- High-performance, high-horsepower sports cars
- Sports driving vehicles
- Vehicles to prolong the lubricant change interval
- Small sedans, RVs and SUVs
- Kixx PAO 1 0W-30: API SM, ACEA C2-08, ACEA A1/B1, A5/B5-08
- Kixx PAO 1 0W-40: API SN/CF, ACEA A1/B1, A5/B5, C3, BMW Longlife, VW 502/505
- Kixx PAO 5W-30, 5W-40: API SM/CF, ACEA A3/B3-08, A3/B4-08, C3-04, Benz MB 229.51, Volkswagen VW 502/505, BMW Longlife-01, 04, Porsche
Performance
- Significantly reduces particulate buildup due to superior oxidation stability to keep the engine oil cleaner for a longer time
- Kinematic viscosity at 100℃ is higher versus competing products in its class, so sufficient oil film is formed during initial operation to reduce engine wear; maintains the lubricating film at appropriate levels even in high temperatures during driving for a smooth and stable ride
- Very little viscosity reduction caused by prolonged use thanks to outstanding shear stability, meaning minimum friction to ensure superior lubricity
- Superior performance when starting a vehicle in extreme cold with temperatures below minus -50℃; viscosity is maintained in high temperatures so that appropriate lubricating film is formed inside the engine
- Improvement in fuel economy and noise reduction
Overview of Kixx PAO
"Kixx is the engine oil brand name from GS Caltex. Kixx is derived from the English word 'kick' and embodies the meanings of fast, strong and dynamic. Kixx PAO is GS Caltex's top-tier product representing the company's advanced engine oil technology. Kixx PAO is recognized in Korea and around the world for its superior quality levels."

Why you should top up all the oils, not just the gas tank

Just as your body needs fluids to stay healthy, so does your car. Petrol may seem to be the most important one, but there are some that are just as vital to the car’s health, and others that can help with your safety.

“Make sure when you’re getting your car prepped for winter that you’ve topped up your fluids,” says Kevin McNamara, category business manager of automotive fluids for Canadian Tire. “Even when it’s cold outside, your engine can overheat if fluids aren’t moving through it.”

Oil is vital to your car’s health, since it lubricates the moving parts inside the engine and also helps dissipate some of the excess heat it creates. Without oil, an engine could be irreparably damaged in less than a minute.

The oil should be changed and the oil filter replaced at the intervals recommended by the auto manufacturer.

In between changes, it’s a good idea to occasionally check the oil level, especially on an older car. Top it up if necessary, but don’t overfill it, since too much oil can also be harmful.

Synthetic oil is a good (if initially more expensive) choice, not just because it lasts longer and needs to be changed less often, but also because its microscopic particles are more uniform and can do a better job of lubrication than conventional oil.

Engine coolant is commonly known as anti-freeze because its freezing point is well below that of plain water. It absorbs heat from the engine and then flows into the radiator, where it is cooled and sent back out to the engine in a continuous loop.

This fluid should be checked at least twice a year with a coolant tester to be sure it’s still able to withstand cold temperatures. A technician can do this for you, but if you do it yourself, check it only from the coolant reservoir, never by opening the radiator cap.

You should always carry a spare jug of washer fluid and keep the reservoir filled, especially if you do a lot of highway driving, where it can be dangerous to pull over and fill it. You can go through it quickly when other vehicles splash salt up from the road, which quickly dries to an opaque crust. All washer fluid will clean away the grime, but look for all-season or winter-specific options.

“Use fluid with a temperature rating for your province,” McNamara says. “If you use summer fluid, it could freeze in the reservoir and potentially damage it.”

Fluid facts

  • If your locks freeze, use lock de-icer; never warm water. Always keep the de-icer bottle with you, not stored in the glovebox.
  • A car’s “curb weight” is the weight of the vehicle plus all of its fluids, including a full tank of fuel.
  • Other fluids your car may contain include transmission oil, power steering fluid, differential oil, brake fluid, and battery electrolyte.

When is my engine oil change really due?

When asked, you may hear answers such as every 3000, 5000 or 7500 miles, or when the vehicle's oil monitor indicates that this service is necessary. It is no wonder consumers are confused. The simplest answer... well, there is no simple answer! In fact, there is no interval that applies to most vehicles.

AMRA/MAP has been examining this question for some time. Read on to find out what we feel every motorist needs to know about this subject.

The engine serves as the heart of your vehicle, so changing its oil based on the manufacturer's recommendation is perhaps the single most important thing that you can do to keep your vehicle's engine running longer. However, you must read these recommendations closely to determine the correct interval; the interval that matches your vehicle's operating conditions and your driving habits.

The Normal interval listed in the owner's manual applies to vehicles driven under ideal conditions. While you may consider your driving habits and operating conditions quite normal, read the fine print. Some exceptions to Normal driving include:

  • Frequent short trips (less than 10 miles, especially during cold weather)
  • Stop-and-go city traffic driving
  • Driving in dusty conditions, on gravel roads, etc.
  • Driving at sustained highway speeds during hot weather
  • Towing use
  • Diesel or turbocharged engine

These conditions commonly appear in the description of severe service driving.

AMRA/MAP advises that you read your owner's manual to locate the correct interval.

What about the 3000 mile oil change myth?

Consider these facts:

  • Oil requires complex additives and detergents to help prevent corrosion and sludge buildup
  • Additives allow oil to flow freely at extremely cold temperatures while also providing protection under extremely hot temperatures
  • Testing shows that a er 3000 miles the oil itself still lubricates, but the depletion of critical additives may no longer allow the oil to offer the same protec.on and benefits
  • Longer intervals may benefit the environment, but perhaps at the expense of engine life
  • Re-refined oils offer an alternative for motorists with concerns about the environment
  • Re-refined oils use the remaining lubricating qualities of used oil, and replenish the depleted additives to create oils that meet the quality of new oil
  • Proper Maintenance Helps Extend Vehicle Life!

Your driving type or vehicle usage may affect the maintenance intervals below.

You should follow the manufacturer's service schedule that best matches your vehicle's operating conditions.

  • Those recommendations may include:
  • Change your engine oil at the vehicle manufacturer's recommended service interval that matches your vehicle's operating conditions and your driving habits
  • Check your tire inflation pressure monthly
  • Rotate your tires at the vehicle manufacturer's recommended service interval or every 6 months/5,000 miles
  • Change the engine air filter annually or when visibly restricted.
  • Inspect Brake System every 12 months/15,000 miles

Top 5 Reasons Your Car Is Vibrating

Own a car long enough and there's a good chance you'll develop auto problems of some nature. And one of the most common and most bothersome problems is vibration. What's more, it often creeps up on you gradually and subtly -- until one day you find yourself wondering how you ever put up with such an annoyance.

Perhaps then you asked yourself, what does it mean if my car is vibrating? While there's no substitute for the assessment of someone with an extensive automotive background, you can develop a good feel yourself for diagnosing car problems that are relatively common, such as vibrations.

The fix could be something relatively cheap and simple, like a tire rotation or balance. Or it could signal more serious auto problems -- something more costly, like steering or suspension issues.

Diagnosing car trouble in its early stages may seem like a hassle at first, but you have to remember that it can often save you from bigger car trouble (and bigger repair bills) down the road.

If your vehicle shakes, shimmies or vibrates out of the ordinary, or if you're just interested in preventing those conditions in the first place, keep reading. This article will take a look at the top 5 reasons behind a vibrating car.

1. Tire Problem

We listed tires last, and made them reason #1, since they are so frequently the source of your car's moving vibrations.
The full list of ways in which tire issues can contribute to your vehicular shake, rattle and roll is a long one. But here are just some of the major ones:
  • Car vibrates at certain speeds -- requires tire balance
  • Tires have separated tread -- requires tire replacement
  • Uneven tire wear -- requires tire rotation
  • Tires are "out of round" and roll unevenly - requires tire replacement

Sometimes it isn't the tires, but rather the wheels they're wrapped around that cause your car or truck to vibrate when driven. Watch out for potholes and sloppy road repairs which can both be equally hazardous to your wheels.

Also, keep in mind that these five reasons your car is vibrating aren't the only possible culprits. When in doubt, it's always a good idea to see an automotive service professional.

2. Wobbly Wheels

Often, you'll feel your car vibrating directly through your steering wheel. And one seemingly logical thing to guess is that an alignment issue might be the culprit. But car experts often advise otherwise.

One or more wheels may suffer from excessive "play," or wobbliness, at the hub itself. The diagnosis and cure for this is pretty involved, as it could point to any of a number of issues. First, let's just assume that each wheel is fastened securely to its hub with properly torqued lug nuts.

With that out of the way, the solution to a shaky wheel might entail replacing the wheel bearings. On most modern vehicles, wheel bearings are meant to last the life of the car or truck. But as you may already know, if you subject your vehicle to worse-than-typical wear-and-tear (off-roading, extremely hard driving, high mileage), it's not unheard-of for bearings to wear out.

Another thing to look for is "runout." This is the term that describes how much a wheel deviates from a perfectly circular rotation when it is spun. Wheel technicians use precision instruments to determine if runout on any particular wheel exceeds half an inch. Much of the time -- but not all the time -- the solution is a new wheel.
Other sources of wiggling, wobbly wheels include the tie-rod ends or ball joints. If they're worn out, they'll allow too much play in the wheel. At driving speeds, this translates to annoying vibration.

Wheels prove to be a common culprit when tracking down reasons for why a car is vibrating. But we can narrow it down even more. For our top reason your car is vibrating, go to the next page.

3. Brake Trouble

Do those bad vibrations appear or intensify when you apply the brakes? If so, there's a strong possibility that your car is tooling about with a warped brake rotor, or rotors.

The rotor is the shiny, silver disc-shaped component on vehicles with a disc brake system. The rotor can get bent out of shape due to heavy wear and tear -- basically, overheating from more stopping than that particular rotor can handle. Instead of being uniformly flat all the way across, a deformed rotor is raised or lowered on part of its surface. Thecalipers and brake pads, which squeeze the brake rotors to make the car stop, can't get an even grip on a warped rotor. Hence, vibration.

If you're not handy with a wrench, it's a good idea to see a brake specialist who can tell you the condition of your vehicle's rotors or brake drums (on cars with rear drum brakes).

4. Axel Problems

Our vehicles are full of reciprocating, rotating parts that have to fall within certain measurements, or tolerances, in order to perform properly.

If an axle gets bent -- which is actually quite easy to do in a collision or other mishap -- it will create a jostle of a ride afterward. With this problem, the vibrating often picks up in intensity the faster you drive.

A related problem would be that the driveshaft also needs inspection. This rapidly spinning part transfers engine power to the rear axles and wheels in rear-wheel drive vehicles. If it's bent, shaking may result.

Worn-out constant velocity (CV) joints fall under the same category. If the "boots" -- those rubber, accordion-like coverings around the ends of the drive axles -- are intact, clamps are secure, and no lubricant is seeping out, chances are they're not the problem. But if the boots are torn, that means dirt and dust and road filth is getting in and damaging the joints. For front-wheel drive cars, toasted CV joints mean you'll be buying new drive axles, too.

5. Engine Problems

Sometimes a shake or shudder will emanate from the engine compartment, because the engine isn't getting enough air, fuel or spark that it needs to run smoothly.

Symptoms that might indicate such an engine-related case of the shakes include the following:
  • Shudder or jerking occurs during acceleration
  • Staccato shaking, as if over a highway "rumble strip," within a specific speed range
  • Car starts and drives fine for a while, but later begins to shake

These symptoms could be signaling that it's time for a new set of spark plugs. If the plugs are fine, it could be that the spark plug wires need to be checked (are they connected in the proper order?) or replacing.

Lastly, a dirty air filter or clogged fuel filter can starve the engine of needed oxygen or fuel, respectively. So be sure to replace them at the manufacturer's recommended intervals.
